Police reminded residents that check washing and mail theft continue to be common scams. Residents were encouraged to avoid mailing checks whenever possible, use permanent black ink when writing checks, and monitor financial accounts closely.

Residents who believe they are victims of identity theft should immediately contact their bank, law enforcement and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and maintain documentation of all communications and reports.
