Hot Topics from Huntington Matters Community Forum
Conversations inside Huntington Matters Community Forum continue to reflect what residents are seeing and talking about right now.
One major topic this week was the fencing installed at Kerber’s Farm as part of an educational agriculture project. Initial reactions quickly turned into a more informed discussion about protecting crops from Long Island’s deer population and supporting long-term agricultural education.
Another conversation focused on cemetery regulations after families were asked to remove personal items from gravesites, a reminder that many of these rules have been in place for years and are tied to safety and maintenance.
One post in particular caught everyone’s attention.
Eileen posted in a panic after realizing she may have given someone the wrong pepper plant recommendation for chile rellenos while shopping at Home Depot. What started as a moment of anxiety turned into one of the most talked-about posts of the week, reaching nearly 59,000 people, and just like we see time and time again in Huntington Matters Community Forum, within hours the person she helped found the post and responded.
It was funny, honest, and very real.
More importantly, it showed exactly what makes Huntington Matters Community Forum so special. People show up for each other, even over something as simple as a pepper.
Neighborhood Watch: $19,000 Theft at Melville FedEx
Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct are investigating a theft at a FedEx location in Melville.
A woman used fraudulent identification to obtain a package containing approximately $19,000 worth of silver bars and coins before leaving the scene in a white Chevrolet Equinox.
The suspect remains wanted. Anyone with information is asked to contact Suffolk County Police at 1-800-220-TIPS or submit tips anonymously online at P3Tips.com.
This incident also opened up a larger conversation around targeted package thefts, including cases where high value deliveries like new cell phones are intercepted, sometimes involving inside information.
Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions when expecting valuable deliveries.
Emergency Preparedness: Set Up Your Medical ID
Set up your Medical ID on your phone.
Both iPhone and Android devices allow first responders to access critical information like medical conditions, medications, allergies, and emergency contacts, even when your phone is locked.
It takes just a few minutes and can make a life-saving difference.
Charity Spotlight: Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary
Tucked into a residential neighborhood in Northport sits one of Huntington’s most unique and meaningful places.
The Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary is a historic farm dating back to the 1800s. Today, it is a refuge for rescued farm animals, many of whom are older and require specialized diets, medication, and daily care.
The farm is run entirely by volunteers and depends on donations from our community to continue operating. Everything from feeding and medical care to maintaining the historic property is handled by a small but dedicated group.
In January 2024, after a post in Huntington Matters Community Forum asking for help with food donations, Huntington Matters Gives Back stepped in to fulfill their wish list of needed supplies – made possible by HMGB’s Sponsor Empire Automotive Group. During that visit, our team received an in-depth tour of the farm and saw firsthand the level of care these animals receive every day.
The farm is open to visitors, but residents are reminded not to feed the animals due to their specialized diets and medical needs.
If you’d like to support the Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary, you can donate or learn more through their website. Volunteers are also welcome, with opportunities available for adults who want to help care for the animals and maintain the property.
