The Community Earth Day celebration at West Hills County Park drew large crowds, with families, music, activities for kids, and strong support from local organizations and volunteers. Traffic and parking were challenging, but the turnout reflected how engaged the community continues to be.
Looking ahead, the Town of Huntington Family Earth Day at Elwood Park offers a full day of activities including crafts, environmental education, animal experiences, beekeeping demonstrations, and food trucks.
In Cold Spring Harbor, The Blue Whale shop hosts its Spring Fling gathering, giving residents a chance to meet artists and explore local crafts.
Saturday also includes a fundraiser event, Back to the 80s Casino Night, supporting Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue, with proceeds going directly to animal rescue efforts.
For local business owners, the Northport Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast provides an opportunity to connect and learn, with this month’s focus on how AI can support business operations and marketing.
The Project Prom event at the Flanagan Center returns again this year, offering free prom attire, accessories, and support for students across the Town of Huntington, helping ensure every student can participate in this milestone event. Student ID required.

Community Conversations: Huntington Station Shooting
A tragic and concerning incident unfolded this week in Huntington Station.
A man was shot behind the One Stop Deli at 150 West Pulaski Road at approximately 4:15 PM.
When Suffolk County Police Department officers arrived, they found an adult male with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police conducted an extensive search involving K-9 units and aviation, but the suspect has not been apprehended. Authorities have stated that the shooting appears to be targeted.
This marks a deeply unsettling moment for the community, with the lack of information during the search causing frustration.
Residents are reminded that information in cases like this may take time to be released, as investigators work to build a case. Unverified information circulating on social media should be approached with caution.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
E-Bike and E-Scooter Enforcement and Safety Updates
E-bike safety remains a growing concern across Huntington, especially following multiple recent accidents involving young riders.
Suffolk County has now moved into active enforcement of updated e-bike and e-scooter laws.
Key points residents should understand:
- Riders must be at least 16 years old
- Helmets are required for all ages
- Class 3 e-bikes, which exceed 20 mph, are not permitted
- E-bikes and scooters are not allowed on sidewalks
- Roads with speed limits above 30 mph are restricted
Violations can result in fines, confiscation of the vehicle, and financial liability for damages.
Officials emphasized that enforcement is now underway, and families should be aware of the legal and safety risks associated with improper use.
The increase in accidents and risky behavior has pushed these regulations forward, with the goal of preventing more serious injuries.
Local Business Closing After 30 Years
Zaro’s Cafe, a longtime local favorite, is closing after more than three decades in Huntington.
The closure marks the end of an era for many residents who have frequented the restaurant for years. The final day of operation on Saturday, April 25th is expected to draw strong community turnout as patrons return one last time.
Moments like this highlight the importance of supporting local businesses and recognizing their role in the fabric of the community.
What Do You Think: Neighbors Helping Neighbors
This week’s community question focused on a simple but meaningful prompt:
“The best thing a neighbor ever did for me was…”
The responses reflect what many already know. Huntington’s strength comes from its neighbors.
From helping during emergencies to everyday acts like watching homes, collecting mail, or simply checking in, these interactions continue to define what makes the Town of Huntington unique.
Neighborhood Watch: Stay Alert and Take Action
This week’s Neighborhood Watch reminder is simple but important.
If you see something unusual, trust your instincts and call 911.
A recent example shared in the community involved suspicious behavior in a retail store, where multiple residents reported being followed. Because individuals spoke up and reported it, police are able to investigate.
Another example shared highlighted how quickly situations can escalate when no one is paying attention. In one case, a vacant home was stripped of copper piping over time without neighbors realizing what was happening.
Awareness and communication between neighbors remain critical.
Residents are also encouraged to attend the upcoming May 5th Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct community meetings, which provide valuable updates and direct access to officers and leadership.
Weather and Emergency Preparedness
Temperatures are expected to remain in the 60s this week, with some rain in the forecast.
This week’s preparedness reminder focuses on fire safety at home:
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly
- Check fire extinguishers and ensure they are functional
- Avoid overloading outlets or running cords under rugs
- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture
- Clean dryer lint traps and maintain appliances
- Have heating systems inspected annually
Simple steps like these can significantly reduce risk and improve safety at home.
Charity Spotlight: Huntington Youth Bureau
This week’s extended charity spotlight highlights the Huntington Youth Bureau, an organization that has quietly supported families across the Town of Huntington for decades.
The Youth Bureau provides a wide range of services including:
- Free counseling for individuals, families, and youth
- Crisis support through the Sanctuary program
- Addiction services through the Huntington Drug and Alcohol Counseling Center
- Youth Court programs focused on restorative justice
- Project Excel, offering job training and real-world career exposure
- Educational programs, workshops, and in-school support
One of the most important takeaways is that these services are available to residents simply because they live in the Town of Huntington.
Families can reach out for support whether they are facing a major crisis or simply need guidance navigating a concern.
The organization also relies on community involvement. Volunteers can contribute by mentoring, leading workshops, or sharing professional skills with students.
Recent support has expanded their capabilities, including new transportation resources that allow more students to participate in programs and attend off-island opportunities.
For many residents, this remains one of the most valuable and under-recognized resources available in the community.
