We reflected on the election season in Huntington Matters Community Forum, where our Volunteer Moderators worked to keep political discussions civil by declining negative campaign posts and removing inappropriate comments.

Now that Election Day has passed, we’ll continue following what happens next and how decisions made by elected officials affect our communities. We thank all of the candidates who stepped forward to run for office, giving voters great choices at the polls.

Emergency Preparedness: Could You Handle an Extended Power Outage?

▶️ Watch this segment.

Whether caused by cyberattacks, severe storms, or equipment failures, extended power outages can happen. Drawing on her experience as a former American Red Cross preparedness instructor, Diane Schaber encouraged residents to prepare for at least three days without electricity and shared how she organizes her own emergency supplies.

Diane recommended keeping nonperishable foods, paper goods, flashlights, lanterns, spare batteries, and at least one gallon of water per person per day, with extra water for infants and other needs. She suggested buying a few additional items during regular grocery trips, checking expiration dates twice a year, and storing heavier supplies on lower shelves. Solar garden lights can provide emergency lighting, while outdoor grills can offer a cooking option but must never be used indoors.

She also reminded residents to keep emergency cash in a waterproof container since ATMs and electronic payments may not work during an outage. Diane encouraged neighbors to attend the upcoming free New York State Citizen Preparedness training in Melville for additional guidance and emergency supplies.

Her message: Prepare, don’t panic.
