GREENLAWN, NY – MAY 5, 2026

Inspector Markus Rivera, Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct, led the May 2026 community meeting at Harborfields Public Library in Greenlawn.

Police reviewed April crime statistics, arrests, incidents across the precinct, a homicide investigation, a murder-for-hire indictment, massage parlor enforcement, e-bike safety, ShotSpotter activations, domestic incidents, overdoses, traffic enforcement, scam prevention reminders, and upcoming community events.

Crime Statistics

Police reported one murder in April, along with one robbery, 12 aggravated assaults, two residential burglaries, zero commercial burglaries, and continued decreases in larceny and other property crimes. Year-to-date trends show property crime trending downward while violent crime has seen a slight increase. Police also highlighted over 1,100 calls for service during the month, with Wednesday and Thursday identified as the busiest days.

Arrests Breakdown

Police reported 35 felony arrests and 116 misdemeanor arrests in April. This included 6 assaults and 3 gang members arrested for non-gang related activity, along with 11 drug-related arrests and 18 DWI arrests. Police emphasized that DWI enforcement remains a priority due to ongoing traffic safety concerns.

Incidents of Note Across the Precinct

Bogart Street, Huntington Station – Burglary 2nd – domestic juvenile incident involving forced entry through a window. Officers determined there was no stabbing, and the injury involved the subject cutting himself. An arrest was made.

Cook Street, Huntington Station – Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree arrest after officers responded to a 911 call for smoke in a basement and recovered an illegal firearm, high-capacity magazine, and ammunition.

Stop & Shop, 1100 E. Jericho Turnpike, Huntington – Robbery 2nd arrest after a shoplifting incident escalated when force was used against an employee. Two subjects were taken into custody.

Broadway and Little Plains Road, HuntingtonSerious motor vehicle crash involving an e-bike and a school bus resulted in serious injuries to a teenage rider.

150 W. Pulaski Road, Huntington StationHomicide investigation after a man was shot outside One Stop Deli and later pronounced deceased. Detectives believe the incident was targeted and the investigation is ongoing. After this meeting ended, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment of Carlos Castro in this fatal shooting.

Huntington Station – Murder-for-hire indictment connected to a 2022 homicide. Prosecutors announced charges against three individuals in an alleged plot tied to an ongoing dispute. The case is proceeding through the courts.

Massage / Spa Enforcement – Huntington Station and East Northport

Valley Sole Spa, Broadway, Greenlawn – 1 employee arrested for Unauthorized Practice of a Profession and Prostitution. Multiple Fire Marshal and Code Enforcement violations were issued. Investigation is ongoing.

Roslyn Spa, Jericho Turnpike, East Northport – 2 employees arrested for Unauthorized Practice of a Profession and Prostitution. Multiple violations were issued, and follow-up enforcement activity is continuing.

E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety and Enforcement

Police emphasized increasing concerns related to e-bike safety following a serious crash in April. Police reinforced key laws:

  • Helmets required for all riders
  • No riding on sidewalks
  • No riding on roadways over 30 mph speed limit
  • Riders under 16 are not permitted to operate e-bikes
  • Class 1 and Class 2 E-bikes ONLY, Scooters max 15 mph

Police stated enforcement is focused on safety and prevention, not revenue, and that underage riders will result in bike seizure.

Traffic Enforcement – S.I.T.E. Team

The Suffolk Intensified Traffic Enforcement Team issued 166 summonses during the month, including 141 moving violations and 25 non-moving violations. Enforcement activity focused on major roadways including New York Avenue, Vanderbilt Parkway, Spring Road, Jericho Turnpike, Seaman Neck Road, Route 231, and Wolf Hill Road.

Police emphasized that aggressive driving, speeding, and DWI enforcement remain ongoing priorities, with traffic safety continuing to be one of the precinct’s biggest challenges.

ShotSpotter Activations – Huntington Station

Police reported four ShotSpotter activations in April, all of which resulted in negative findings. The homicide incident on April 20 did not trigger a ShotSpotter activation due to location coverage limitations.

Domestic Incidents and Overdoses

Police reported 184 domestic incidents, including 61 criminal cases and 32 arrests. Four overdoses were reported, including three non-fatal and one fatal. Police also reported no fatal motor vehicle accidents during the month.

Scam and Crime Prevention Reminders

Police warned residents about check washing, identity theft, and phone scams. Residents were advised to avoid mailing checks when possible, use secure payment methods, and be cautious of spoofed phone numbers impersonating law enforcement or financial institutions. Residents are encouraged to review the meeting slides for additional scam prevention guidelines.

Become an Auxiliary Police Officer

The Suffolk County Police Department continues to encourage residents to join the Auxiliary Police program. Volunteers assist with community patrols, events, and public safety visibility, playing an important role in supporting local policing efforts.

Operation Medicine Cabinet

Following the precinct meeting, Dana Richter and Diane Schaber visited Operation Medicine Cabinet at the Harborfields Public Library, where residents were able to safely dispose of expired and unwanted medications.

The initiative, held in partnership with the Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct, provides a safe and environmentally responsible way to remove unused medications from homes.

Photos from the event show proper disposal methods and help demonstrate how residents can take part in future Operation Medicine Cabinet events across the Town of Huntington.
