Sumuk Ink Painting Workshop – Walt Whitman Birthplace

The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is thrilled to announce the return of acclaimed artist and educator Professor Jimin Bae for a special, immersive Sumuk (East Asian ink wash) painting workshop.

Following previous sold-out sessions, this highly anticipated event offers participants a unique opportunity to explore traditional ink aesthetics on the historic grounds where America’s greatest poet was born.
Sumuk painting is a revered, centuries-old art form that uses black ink in various concentrations to capture the spiritual essence of a subject rather than its literal appearance. Professor Bae, a master of the craft known for her dynamic teaching style, will guide attendees through the fundamental brush strokes, water control techniques, and philosophical concepts that define this meditative artistic practice.
The workshop is designed to bridge Eastern artistic traditions with the naturalistic, free-verse spirit of Walt Whitman. Participants will learn to channel their surroundings into expressive ink landscapes and floral compositions, creating their own masterpieces to take home.
Open to all levels, from absolute beginners to experienced artists.
