Pride Month: Walt Whitman Out Loud with Mark Doty

Join National Book Award-winning poet and memoirist Mark Doty for an exploration of Walt Whitman’s poetry, identity, and enduring influence as part of Pride Month. 

The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association presents Pride Month: Walt Whitman Out Loud, a special afternoon featuring acclaimed poet and memoirist Mark Doty.
In celebration of Pride Month, Doty will lead a deep exploration of Walt Whitman’s poetry, focusing on Whitman’s embrace of same-sex love, identity, and body positivity. The program will examine the connection between Whitman’s radical inclusivity and contemporary LGBTQ+ themes through readings, analysis, and discussion.
The event will include a conversation and audience Q&A, followed by a book signing.

Mark Doty is the author of nine volumes of poetry, including Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems, winner of the 2008 National Book Award, and the New York Times bestselling memoir What Is the Grass, which explores his lifelong connection to the work of Walt Whitman.
Hosted by the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, dedicated to preserving Whitman’s legacy through educational programs, cultural events, and community engagement.
