Art Without Barriers: Celebrating the ADA at The Heckscher Museum
Join us for this free community event celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)!
This gathering was created in collaboration with Heckscher Museum’s Accessibility Advisory Group and welcomes everyone.
It was created with and for the Deaf community, blind and low vision community, individuals with developmental disabilities, people who are neurodivergent, and people of all ages and abilities.
Enjoy a vibrant selection of hands-on and interactive art activities and sensory experiences designed for all types of learners both inside the Museum and outside in beautiful Heckscher Park. Whether through touch, sight, sound, movement, or creative expression, there’s something meaningful for every participant to explore, create and connect.
Event highlights include:
12:30 PM & 2:30 PM: Children’s book readings in American Sign Language (ASL) with Susie Sussman and Dawn DeRisi, plus an opportunity to learn how to sign the Pledge of Allegiance.
12:30 PM: Magic performance by Deaf magician Steve Weiner.
1:30 PM & 3:30 PM: ASL tours of the exhibition Just Powers: Long Island Biennial 2026.
Touch objects generously loaned by exhibiting artists.
Surprise art boxes created by artist Joan Kim Suzuki.
Objects from the Museum of Disability History collection.
Meet Long Island Biennial artist Eileen Shaloum and create a collaborative textile art project.
Experience the Spirit of Huntington Art Center’s Sensory Station.
Meet Deaf artist Charles Wildbank and learn about his artwork.
Art activities inspired by the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
