A collaboration between The Heckscher Museum, Planned Parenthood, and Protégé Art Studio – Join us for an inspiring evening at The Heckscher Museum in partnership with Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic and Protégé Art Studio!
Take a private guided tour of the collection through the lens of LGBTQIA+ identities and histories on Fire Island in the exhibition All of Me with All of You: LGBTQ Art Out of the Collection. Examine the impact of identity and stigma on health care access in the LGBTQIA+ community. Then, explore the creativity of visual storytelling and collage to develop connections that bring the community together.
Begin the evening with a curator-led tour of the exhibition with Curatorial Assistant Jessica Rosen. Delve into the queer history of Fire Island explored through the work of artist collective PaJaMa in the 40’s and 50’s and photographer Joanne Mulberg in the 70’s and 80’s. Then, delve into a discussion about the current conversations regarding how stigma impacts policy regarding essential health care with Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. See where there are common threads through the past and the present discourse in the community. Finally, join Robyn Cooper as she guides you through a hands-on experience exploring the connection between photographs and memories. Using a variety of materials, participants will create a mixed media work of art incorporating a personal photograph into a visual storytelling experience. At the end of the workshop, individual collages will be combined to form a collective memory quilt, showcasing the shared stories of the group. Bring a photo that reflects a fond memory of your past! All other materials provided. All levels welcome – no experience necessary! Light refreshments will be served.
