Dr. Tara Rider of Stony Brook University will give a lecture on The Devil in New York: The Witchcraft Trial of Goody Garlick. 

More than three decades before the notorious Salem witch trials, Long Island had its own witchcraft trial—the trial of Goody Garlick in 1658.

Explore the stresses of ordinary 17th-century life in New York, why the fear of witches existed, and the hysteria surrounding accusations of witchcraft. The trial of Goody Garlick will serve as a lens for understanding the beliefs, fears, and circumstances that fueled these accusations.

Tara Rider is a senior lecturer at Stony Brook University in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences with a multidisciplinary background in history, marine studies, and sustainability. Her research focuses on how nature, gender, and race are entwined with questions of power, culture, and identity.
