Drug-Impaired Driving Laws and the Push for Reform

District Attorney Ray Tierney highlighted a critical gap in New York State’s drug-impaired driving laws. Currently, officers must identify a specific drug listed in state public health law to arrest an impaired driver – leaving many dangerous substances unaddressed. DA Tierney is pushing for legislation that treats drug impairment the same as alcohol impairment, focusing on driver condition rather than the substance. While the proposal has strong bipartisan support, a vote has been blocked in Albany. New York remains one of only four states with this restriction.

Suffolk County law enforcement leaders met with community members to discuss current public safety initiatives and ongoing challenges across the county.

Education and Enforcement to Improve Traffic Safety

Deputy Bureau Chief Laura Newcombe, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, discussed traffic safety education programs in local high schools, noting that Suffolk County leads New York State in traffic-related accidents and that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for ages 15 to 24.

Smithtown High School East students Barrett James, Laina Maggiulli, and Miabela Ortiz shared their peer-led initiative educating younger students on e-bike and scooter safety, including age restrictions and helmet requirements.

Crackdown on Street Takeovers and Ghost Plates

Suffolk County Police Department Chief William Doherty reported on the Street Takeover Task Force’s progress, which has stopped 90 takeovers, impounded 113 vehicles, made 70 arrests and received more than 500 Crime Stoppers tips.

Suffolk County Undersheriff John Becker presented on the regional crackdown on “ghost plates,” with partnerships across multiple agencies leading to arrests, impoundments, cleared warrants, and recovery of stolen property and weapons.

The meeting emphasized the importance of education, enforcement, and legislative reform in keeping Suffolk County communities safe.

GANG ASSAULT 1ST with a HAMMER on Lowndes Ave,, Huntington Station causing severe injuries. 2 Arrests made.

ROBBERY 2ND at Saks 5th Ave, Walt Whitman Shops – Sunglasses stolen.

BURGLARY 2ND: Primo Audio, 1809 E. Jericho Turnpike, Huntington Station – Bass speaker.

WEAPONS ARREST – AR-15 RIFLE & High Capacity Magazine – Lawson Place, Dix Hills AND 3rd Ave, Huntington Station. Domestic Incident. Arrest made.

S.P.I. AIDED INVESTIGATION on Bayberry Dr., Huntington – 53yo male seriously injured in electric scooter fall/crash.

MASSAGE PARLOR ARRESTS with Human Trafficking Unit, Asset Forfeiture Unit and Town of Huntington – Huntington, Huntington Station, Dix Hills. 6 Arrests made.

SITE TEAM TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT – Visited 7 locations of concern and issued 94 summonses.

FATAL CAR ACCIDENT – Pulaski & Stonyhollow Rd, Greenlawn. Motorcycle.

5 GANG MEMBERS ARRESTED – Los Kids, MS-13, Crip + 19 Other Arrests by Anti-Crime.

DOMESTIC INCIDENTS: 197 with 61 Criminal and 27 Arrests.

OVERDOSES: Non-Fatal = 2 in Huntington Station and Greenlawn.

SHOT SPOTTER: 5 activations with negative results.

REMINDERS TO STAY SAFE: Lock your doors. Don’t leave valuables in the car. Don’t leave keys in the car. Don’t leave valuables in shopping carts. Set video devices to record and check them regularly.

REMINDERS ABOUT SCAMS: Gift Cards = Scam. Beware of Mail Theft and Check Washing. Phone call of relative arrested and asking you to post Bail Money = Scam. Pop up on Computer (Virus Protection) do NOT let anyone remotely access your home computer! Beware of known phone numbers being spoofed for caller ID = Latest are SCPD and NY State Police numbers with callers asking for money = SCAM!
