Suffolk Police To Offer Entrance Exam Every Two Years, Ending Four-Year Wait

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – Issued June 3, 2026

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina are announcing a new testing schedule for the Suffolk County Police entrance exam following approval from Suffolk County Civil Service.

Beginning in the spring of 2027, the test to become a Suffolk County police officer will be offered every two years, replacing the previous four-year testing cycle, providing individuals with more opportunities to join the department.

The new schedule is designed to strengthen the department’s recruitment effort by creating a more consistent flow of candidates, reducing attrition, and shortening the time between examination and hiring. The change will provide greater access to a career with SCPD by doubling the opportunities for applicants to enter the hiring pool.

“Suffolk County is one of the safest places in the country as we are committed to providing our law enforcement with the best resources available,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said. “By making the police test more accessible and providing applicants additional opportunities, we are casting a wider net to recruit the best and brightest to protect our communities.”

“This change provides more opportunities for qualified candidates to pursue a job in law enforcement while strengthening our ability to recruit and retain the best talent,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said. “This change will help reduce delays in the recruitment process and ensure we remain prepared to meet the public safety needs of our residents.”
