OM Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu Free Youth Class: Sensei Milard Roper supervises 2 pairs of students grappling.

Northport, NY – OM Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu, 220 Church Street, Northport, is open to local youth every Monday from 4:30 to 5:15 pm – completely free of charge. This community initiative, led by Sensei Milard Roper, gives children and young teens an opportunity to learn a respected martial art while developing valuable life skills in a safe, supportive environment.

A Gift to the Community

The free class program was designed to make Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu (BJJ) accessible to any child in the Huntington area and beyond, regardless of financial circumstances. By removing cost as a barrier, OM BJJ hopes to reach kids who might never have considered martial arts and introduce them to the benefits of consistent training, discipline, and positive peer interaction. The goal is simple: let the child have the chance to grow stronger, inside and out, without worrying about whether they can afford it.

What Kids Learn on the Mats

Students in the Monday classes are guided through basic BJJ skills – safe falling, positional control, escapes, and simple submissions – always with an emphasis on respect and safety.

Beyond the techniques, students develop:

  • Discipline – showing up on time, following structure, and committing to class time.
  • Responsibility – caring for their fellow students and upholding dojo etiquette.
  • Maturity – handling challenges calmly, accepting instruction, and supporting their peers.

Physically, BJJ builds strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination, all while providing a healthy outlet for energy. Mentally, it sharpens focus, problem‑solving, and resilience.

About Sensei Milard Roper and OM BJJ

OM BJJ traces its lineage directly back to Master Renzo Gracie for BJJ and Jigoro Kano for the art of Judo. Owing everything to his teachers, Sensei Milard feels blessed to have made such powerful connections in both the Martial Arts as well as Yoga communities. He has been graced with so many great teachers and friends along his martial path. He has studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 23 Years under such great instructors as Amal Easton, Jay Jack, Joe Scarolla, Tom Muller, Nick Serra and Rich Korfhage. Sensei Milard received his black belt in BJJ from his Professor, Rich Korfahge and he continues to study with Sifu Ralph Mitchell, learning the art of JKD and Sensei Joe Turchiano in the art of Judo. Before coming to BJJ, he had extensive instruction from other world-class martial artists like Chan Bong and Louie Jack Man.
