Dog Park Incident Raises Concern in West Hills

One of the most talked-about topics this week in Huntington Matters Community Forum was a disturbing incident at the West Hills County Park dog park.

According to reports, a man stabbed a dog and later told police he “did what he had to do.”

For many local residents, this park is more than just a place to walk dogs. Diane and Dana both shared that they regularly bring their dogs there and are part of a supportive, familiar community of dog owners who look out for one another.

They noted that in their experience, there have not been issues like this, and that dog parks can be safe, positive environments when used appropriately. For those new to dog parks, it’s recommended to visit during less crowded times or slowly acclimate dogs on leash over multiple visits before allowing full group interaction.

Missing Person Update and Ongoing Search

There was encouraging news this week regarding Justin Rodriguez, who has been found safe in Manhattan and referred for medical attention.

However, the community is still being asked to stay alert for Joseph Competiello of Elwood, age 55, approximately 5’8” tall, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and a shaved head.

As always, residents are encouraged to report any information to Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-TIPS and to continue sharing updates when possible.

A Busy Week of Events Across Huntington

It was a big weekend across Huntington, with thousands of families attending Easter events throughout the town.

The Town of Huntington hosted an egg hunt with 4,000 eggs, while the United Lutheran Church event welcomed nearly 800 children.

Looking ahead, there are many opportunities to get involved.

The Historic Cemetery Restoration Project continues this weekend, and volunteers are being sought to help clean and maintain Revolutionary War burial sites ahead of the upcoming Liberty 250 commemoration.

On Sunday, the Hope and Healing Statue Blessing Ceremony will take place at Heckscher Park, bringing together community members, local leaders, and families for a meaningful event.

Residents can also begin registering for the Town of Huntington’s Project Play and St. John’s summer camp programs, which open this week for income-qualified families.

Additional meetings and events include:

Public Information Session on Broadway Safety Improvements in Greenlawn
Town Board Meeting at Town Hall
Mobile American Flag Drop-Off Program at East Northport Public Library for proper retirement of worn flags

There are many more events happening throughout the week. Be sure to visit the Huntington Matters Community Calendar for full details and to submit your own events.

Huntington Station DRI Meeting Draws Community Attention

Discussion this week also centered around the Huntington Station Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) streetscape meeting.

Residents continue to follow plans that include improvements to sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, and public spaces throughout the area. As we covered in last week’s episode, these changes are expected to impact the look and feel of Huntington Station in the coming years.

Community feedback remains an important part of the process, and meetings like this provide residents with an opportunity to stay informed and engaged.

Neighborhood Watch: Updates from the 2nd Precinct

This week’s Neighborhood Watch update included both positive news and important changes.

In addition to the update on Justin Rodriguez, residents learned that Captain Dennis McKeefery has returned to the 2nd Precinct. He previously served as a COPE officer and worked as a Detective alongside Inspector Rivera.

Captain Kyle Simcox was also recognized as he moves into a new county-wide position.

Residents are encouraged to stay connected through Huntington Matters for ongoing Neighborhood Watch updates.

Warmer Weather and Seasonal Preparedness Tips

With temperatures expected to reach the 70s this week, it’s a good time to check both tree and bush maintenance around your property.

A simple but important tip shared this week focuses on removing the “3 Ds” — dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Residents should also clear branches away from power lines and rooftops, and thin interior growth to reduce wind resistance during storms.

Taking these steps now can help prevent damage later.

Charity Spotlight: American Legion Posts Across Huntington

This week’s spotlight focused on the American Legion, with three active posts serving the Huntington community in Huntington, Greenlawn, and Northport.

Founded in 1919, the American Legion has spent more than a century supporting veterans, servicemembers, and local communities.

Their work continues locally through advocacy, programs, and outreach, while also supporting national efforts that have shaped benefits for generations of veterans.

Huntington Matters also continues its Huntington Matters Gives Back efforts, honoring and remembering Al Statton, creator of the Operation Enduring Care program supporting homeless veterans. These ongoing contributions help continue his mission and support veterans in need within our community.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY – April 8, 2026

An investigation is underway after a man stabbed a dog during an incident at the West Hills County Park big dog run Wednesday afternoon, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. at the popular dog park, where a group of regular attendees and their dogs were gathered.

What Witnesses Reported

According to a tip submitted to Huntington Matters Neighborhood Watch from the community, several dogs were playing together in what was described as rough but typical dog park behavior. Witnesses said the dogs were “roughhousing” but did not appear to be fighting or acting aggressively, and that owners were nearby and able to intervene if needed.

During that time, a man who had brought his own dog into the park, and who attendees said had been seen there before but was not a regular, became concerned about the interaction.

Witnesses say the man entered the group of dogs and stabbed one of them, believing it to be a threat to his dog.

Police Response and Statement

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the man immediately contacted authorities and remained at the scene. In his statement to police, he said he “took matters into his own hands.”

Police said their initial report reflects the man’s account that the incident involved his dog and one other dog. However, witnesses at the scene described a larger group of dogs interacting at the time.

The injured dog’s owner quickly removed the dog from the park and transported it to West Hills Animal Hospital for emergency care. Police confirmed the dog was taken for treatment, but its condition has not been released.

No people were injured during the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

Second Precinct Captain Dennis McKeefery said the Suffolk County Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At this time, police have not determined whether the situation qualifies as self-defense or if criminal charges may be filed.

Investigators are working to gather additional statements and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.

The man’s dog is described as a medium to large poodle mix. The injured dog was reported to be of a similar size, though its breed has not yet been confirmed.

Suffolk Police are asking anyone with information, photos or video to call CrimeStoppers 1-800-220-TIPS or anonymously online at www.P3Tips.com.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

HUNTINGTON, NY – The Halloween spirit was alive and well in Huntington Village this week, as families, friends, and costumed characters of every kind filled the streets for the annual Huntington Halloween Trick or Treat and Costume Parade.

The evening kicked off near the Huntington Post Office, where a sleek race car parked along the street caught everyone’s attention – and no, it wasn’t a Halloween prop! It belonged to Huntington’s own 14-year-old professional race car driver, Darren Krantz, who generously donated plenty of candy for the night’s festivities.

From the starting point at the Post Office to Wall Street, the parade was a lively procession of ghosts, dragons, zebras, superheroes, dogs in costume, cowboys, Ghostbusters, Scooby Doos, and countless other creative ensembles. Local businesses opened their doors – and their candy bowls – to hundreds of eager trick-or-treaters, helping make the night a safe and memorable experience.

From “The Incredibles” to dinosaurs, witches, and even a walking taco or two, and dont forget Winnie The Pooh, Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein, and all the families who joined together to make so many Halloween family themes with their kids, and/or pets, strolling down the street together laughing and having so much fun.

Butterfly fairy. Photography by Diane Schaber.

A special thanks goes to Huntington’s General Services Department for keeping everything running smoothly and safely, and to the Highway Department for their work ensuring pedestrian safety throughout the event. To Town Supervisor Ed Smyth and his wife who had a full table of treats for all, handing out candy and sharing smiles, joined by members of the Town Board, all helping to bring the true spirit of Huntington to life.

The creativity and community pride on display were nothing short of amazing. Events like these remind us how special it is when our town comes together to simply enjoy the night – filled with laughter, costumes, and plenty of Halloween fun.

What a fantastic day at the Dix Hills Animal Hospital Open House! Families, pet lovers, and plenty of furry friends came out to enjoy a celebration filled with fun, education, and community spirit.

Guests were greeted right in the parking lot of 1166 E. Jericho Turnpike, Huntington by the friendly staff and given a map to guide them through the hospital. Before even stepping inside, visitors could stop by Grooming by Jackie’s mobile grooming station for complimentary nail trims and ear cleanings. Nearby, Catalina’s Bake Shop offered a delicious spread of empanadas, cookies, brownies, cupcakes and even special treats for dogs. Two different dog trainers answered questions – Positive Pup Dog Training provides puppy and dog training services and socializing excursions and GR Pet Services, Family Dog Coach specializes in behavior training as a family unit in the home. April Alder from Bed, Bath and Biscuits (718) 344-6660 provides pet boarding and grooming in her home with free door to door pickup and delivery of your pet.

Inside, attendees followed the self-guided tour through the hospital’s different rooms, learning what each space is used for. Demonstrations using stuffed animals showed how pets are cared for during procedures, while representatives from pet insurance companies and pet food brands Hill’s and Royal Canin shared valuable information and plenty of tasty samples. By the end of the tour, guests walked away with a better understanding of the comprehensive care Dix Hills Animal Hospital provides.

The celebration continued out back, where local rescues including Ollie’s Angels Animal Rescue, Remember Me Rescue, and Tender Loving Cats were on hand with adoptable pets looking for their forever homes. Visitors also had the chance to enter raffle basket drawings, with proceeds supporting a Dix Hills Animal Hospital program that helps pets in need of medical care. Dogs made “Lick Paintings” – watch the Live video! – to display on the family refrigerator.

From start to finish, the event was a heartwarming mix of education, fun games, giveaways and community connection. Judging by the smiles – and all the tail wagging – it’s safe to say everyone is hoping this becomes an annual tradition!

See the “Sneak Peek” Live video that Huntington Matters did the afternoon before the event.
