Local Events and Community Highlights

Spring events continue to fill the calendar across Huntington.

The Community Earth Day celebration at West Hills County Park drew large crowds, with families, music, activities for kids, and strong support from local organizations and volunteers. Traffic and parking were challenging, but the turnout reflected how engaged the community continues to be.

Looking ahead, the Town of Huntington Family Earth Day at Elwood Park offers a full day of activities including crafts, environmental education, animal experiences, beekeeping demonstrations, and food trucks.

In Cold Spring Harbor, The Blue Whale shop hosts its Spring Fling gathering, giving residents a chance to meet artists and explore local crafts.

Saturday also includes a fundraiser event, Back to the 80s Casino Night, supporting Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue, with proceeds going directly to animal rescue efforts.

For local business owners, the Northport Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast provides an opportunity to connect and learn, with this month’s focus on how AI can support business operations and marketing.

The Project Prom event at the Flanagan Center returns again this year, offering free prom attire, accessories, and support for students across the Town of Huntington, helping ensure every student can participate in this milestone event. Student ID required.

The 16th Annual Huntington Station Spring Cleanup is also approaching, bringing together residents, volunteers, and local organizations to clean and beautify the area. Our event continues to grow each year and remains one of the most visible examples of community pride in action. Sign Up to Volunteer.

As always, there are many more events happening across the Town of Huntington. Residents are encouraged to visit the Community Calendar and submit their own events to keep the community informed.

Community Conversations: Huntington Station Shooting

A tragic and concerning incident unfolded this week in Huntington Station.

A man was shot behind the One Stop Deli at 150 West Pulaski Road at approximately 4:15 PM.

When Suffolk County Police Department officers arrived, they found an adult male with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police conducted an extensive search involving K-9 units and aviation, but the suspect has not been apprehended. Authorities have stated that the shooting appears to be targeted.

This marks a deeply unsettling moment for the community, with the lack of information during the search causing frustration.

Residents are reminded that information in cases like this may take time to be released, as investigators work to build a case. Unverified information circulating on social media should be approached with caution.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

E-Bike and E-Scooter Enforcement and Safety Updates

E-bike safety remains a growing concern across Huntington, especially following multiple recent accidents involving young riders.

Suffolk County has now moved into active enforcement of updated e-bike and e-scooter laws.

Key points residents should understand:

Riders must be at least 16 years old

Helmets are required for all ages

Class 3 e-bikes, which exceed 20 mph, are not permitted

E-bikes and scooters are not allowed on sidewalks

Roads with speed limits above 30 mph are restricted

Violations can result in fines, confiscation of the vehicle, and financial liability for damages.

Officials emphasized that enforcement is now underway, and families should be aware of the legal and safety risks associated with improper use.

The increase in accidents and risky behavior has pushed these regulations forward, with the goal of preventing more serious injuries.

Local Business Closing After 30 Years

Zaro’s Cafe, a longtime local favorite, is closing after more than three decades in Huntington.

The closure marks the end of an era for many residents who have frequented the restaurant for years. The final day of operation on Saturday, April 25th is expected to draw strong community turnout as patrons return one last time.

Moments like this highlight the importance of supporting local businesses and recognizing their role in the fabric of the community.

What Do You Think: Neighbors Helping Neighbors

This week’s community question focused on a simple but meaningful prompt:

“The best thing a neighbor ever did for me was…”

The responses reflect what many already know. Huntington’s strength comes from its neighbors.

From helping during emergencies to everyday acts like watching homes, collecting mail, or simply checking in, these interactions continue to define what makes the Town of Huntington unique.

Neighborhood Watch: Stay Alert and Take Action

This week’s Neighborhood Watch reminder is simple but important.

If you see something unusual, trust your instincts and call 911.

A recent example shared in the community involved suspicious behavior in a retail store, where multiple residents reported being followed. Because individuals spoke up and reported it, police are able to investigate.

Another example shared highlighted how quickly situations can escalate when no one is paying attention. In one case, a vacant home was stripped of copper piping over time without neighbors realizing what was happening.

Awareness and communication between neighbors remain critical.

Residents are also encouraged to attend the upcoming May 5th Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct community meetings, which provide valuable updates and direct access to officers and leadership.

Weather and Emergency Preparedness

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 60s this week, with some rain in the forecast.

This week’s preparedness reminder focuses on fire safety at home:

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly

Check fire extinguishers and ensure they are functional

Avoid overloading outlets or running cords under rugs

Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture

Clean dryer lint traps and maintain appliances

Have heating systems inspected annually

Simple steps like these can significantly reduce risk and improve safety at home.

Charity Spotlight: Huntington Youth Bureau

This week’s extended charity spotlight highlights the Huntington Youth Bureau, an organization that has quietly supported families across the Town of Huntington for decades.

The Youth Bureau provides a wide range of services including:

Free counseling for individuals, families, and youth

Crisis support through the Sanctuary program

Addiction services through the Huntington Drug and Alcohol Counseling Center

Youth Court programs focused on restorative justice

Project Excel, offering job training and real-world career exposure

Educational programs, workshops, and in-school support

One of the most important takeaways is that these services are available to residents simply because they live in the Town of Huntington.

Families can reach out for support whether they are facing a major crisis or simply need guidance navigating a concern.

The organization also relies on community involvement. Volunteers can contribute by mentoring, leading workshops, or sharing professional skills with students.

Recent support has expanded their capabilities, including new transportation resources that allow more students to participate in programs and attend off-island opportunities.

For many residents, this remains one of the most valuable and under-recognized resources available in the community.

YAPHANK, NY – April 23, 2026

New Suffolk County legislation aimed at improving safety around e-bike and e-scooter use is now being enforced, following growing concerns from residents, law enforcement, and local officials about the rise in serious accidents, particularly involving younger riders.

At a press conference held today by Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine alongside Suffolk County Police Commissioner Frank Catalina and local legislators, officials outlined how the new law will be implemented and enforced.

Romaine underscored the urgency of the issue, stating, “There’s nothing safe about e-bikes. They are inherently dangerous,” as he spoke about the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness under the new law, which was enacted on December 30, 2025.

The legislation was introduced by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, representing the Town of Huntington’s 17th District, with Legislator Rebecca Sanin (16th District) standing alongside her. The measure was unanimously passed by the Suffolk County Legislature and formally adopted as Local Law No. 6-2026.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="630" src="https://huntingtonmatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/E-Bike-2-social.png" alt="Town of Huntington Suffolk County Legislators Stephanie Bontempi (orange) and Rebecca Sanin (bright blue) with County Executive Ed Romaine (red tie) and officials.
According to Commissioner Catalina, the department spent the first few months after passage focusing on education during stops, with enforcement actions beginning in March.

We’ve been covering a number of incidents involving e-bikes in recent months, and the concern from residents has been consistent. These are not toys, and the risks are real.

Enforcement Now Underway

Since March 1, Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol alone has already issued 53 tickets for riding e-bikes and scooters on sidewalks, 37 tickets for operating on roads with speed limits over 30 miles per hour, and six additional violations for other offenses.

The numbers reflect a clear shift from education to enforcement as warmer weather approaches and usage increases.

At today’s press conference, officials also showed video of a recent traffic stop involving a man riding an e-scooter on the shoulder of the Long Island Expressway. Suffolk County Police Highway Officers handled the situation with professionalism, first educating the rider, issuing a summons, and then escorting him safely off the highway.

What’s Changing

The new law adds expanded regulations on how e-bikes and e-scooters can be used across Suffolk County, with a focus on safety, accountability, and enforcement.

Under the law, riders under the age of 16 are not permitted to operate these devices. That age aligns with when teens can begin the process of obtaining a learner’s permit and are expected to understand the rules of the road.

Helmets are now required for all riders, regardless of age, and e-bikes and scooters are not permitted on sidewalks. They are also restricted from roadways with speed limits over 30 miles per hour.

The County Legislature made clear in the law itself that these devices have become a serious public safety concern, particularly for younger riders who may not fully understand traffic laws or the risks involved.

Why Now

“There has been a noticeable increase in incidents involving e-bikes across the county,” said Legislator Rebecca Sanin. “Just last week in my district, a teenager was critically injured at the intersection of Broadway and Little Plains Road in Greenlawn. Nearly every week, similar incidents are reported countywide.”

Legislator Stephanie Bontempi said the legislation was driven directly by residents raising concerns and sharing their experiences.

“My office and those of my colleagues were contacted about the need to do something about the increase in e-bike accidents, and residents showed up at the Legislature to share stories of tragic losses caused by e-bikes,” she said. “The legislation was really a result of resident requests and input.”

She added that the issue extends beyond riders themselves.

Quick Guide to Operating E-Bikes and E-Scooters under New York State Motor Vehicle Law.

“What is important to note is that the legislation does not only address the safety of the e-bike rider, but also the safety of pedestrians and that of motorists.”

What the New Law Actually Does

The law goes further than general guidelines and clearly defines what is and is not allowed.

Reckless operation is now specifically outlined. That includes weaving in and out of traffic, zig-zagging around moving vehicles, riding in a way that puts pedestrians or drivers at risk, performing tricks in active roadways or parking lots, and failing to follow basic traffic safety rules. Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs is also prohibited, using the same standards applied to motor vehicles.

There are real consequences attached. Violations can result in fines, and repeat offenses can escalate to misdemeanor charges with significantly higher penalties. Police also have the authority to seize and impound e-bikes or scooters in certain situations.

Bontempi noted that previous laws did not go far enough.

“The old laws were vague and didn’t account for modern e-bikes,” she said. “They also imposed much lower fines and law enforcement officers could not impound a rider’s bike, which they can do now if the rider is under 16 or riding recklessly.”

For families, one of the most important pieces is this. If a minor violates the law, parents or legal guardians can be held financially responsible. That includes paying fines and covering any damage caused. There is no exception based on lack of awareness. The responsibility still applies.

What Families Should Know

Bontempi emphasized that the law comes with clear expectations for families.

“If your child is less than 16 years old, they cannot ride an e-bike on any public road or County park. If they do and they get caught, the bike will be impounded by law enforcement, and the parent or guardian will be responsible to pay the ensuing fines,” she said.

She added that both riders and passengers are required to wear helmets, and that e-bikes are not permitted to exceed 20 miles per hour.

“I urge parents and riders to educate themselves on the new laws. We passed them to ensure that riders, pedestrians, and motorists reach their destination as safely as possible. Hopefully, by everyone familiarizing themselves with and abiding by the new legislation, we can avoid further tragic accidents in our town and in the rest of Suffolk County.”

Quick Guide to Operating E-Bikes and E-Scooters under New York State Motor Vehicle Law.

Sanin also pointed to the importance of awareness and education.

“Parents considering the purchase of an e-bike should take the time to thoroughly research these devices and ensure that both they and their children understand proper safety practices, legal requirements, and the risks associated with their use.”

What Police Are Seeing

At the April Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct Community Meeting, Inspector Kevin Rivera spoke directly about what officers have been seeing locally.

“Last summer, just countywide, there were so many serious physical injuries and even fatalities with these e-bikes,” Rivera said. “These things are so fast right now. It seems like every kid wants one. Some don’t wear helmets, they don’t realize how dangerous they are. And I think a lot of parents don’t realize it.”

Behind the Legislation

The legislation was a fully bipartisan effort, reflecting shared concerns across the County Legislature.

There was some discussion around how the law would apply in areas like Fire Island, where e-bikes are more commonly used due to limited roadway infrastructure. Adjustments were made to account for those conditions while maintaining the overall safety intent.

What Could Be Coming Next

At the state level, additional legislation is already being discussed that could go even further.

A proposal known as Priscilla’s Law, named after a victim of a 2023 fatal crash involving an e-bike, would require e-bikes and e-scooters to be registered and display visible license plates. The goal is to make riders identifiable in cases of reckless driving, traffic violations, or hit-and-run incidents.

While it has not yet been adopted statewide, it reflects the same concerns being raised locally around safety and accountability. It’s a sign that the conversation around e-bike safety is far from over.

Community Moments That Reflect Huntington

This week’s episode opened with one of those genuine, unscripted moments that just happens when we’re together. It quickly turned into laughter and connection, and honestly, those are the moments that longtime followers of Huntington Matters have come to expect from us.

For more than a decade, the platform has been built on real relationships and authentic conversations. Those small moments, often unplanned, continue to resonate because they reflect what makes this community different. Neighbors showing up for each other in real ways.

Local Events and Community Highlights

Spring has officially arrived in Huntington, and the calendar is filling up quickly.

The Hope and Healing sculpture was recently blessed, creating a space for reflection and support within the community. The project, years in the making, represents a collaborative effort by the Town of Huntington Opioid Task Force and continues to draw visitors seeking a place to pause and reflect.

Downtown Huntington also saw a busy week, including Ben and Jerry’s Free Cone Day, where donations supported the Tri CYA’s programs, and a ribbon cutting for Fortunoff Backyard Store, now located in the former Sam Ash building. The new showroom brings a high-end outdoor furniture destination back into a familiar local space.

Looking ahead, the Earth Day celebration at West Hills County Park will bring together families, environmental groups, and local organizations for a day of education and activities. Residents are encouraged to check the Huntington Matters Community Calendar for additional Earth Day events happening across town.

Another meaningful event this weekend is the Tri Village Little League field dedication, honoring Corey Phelan, a young Huntington resident whose legacy continues to impact the community.

The Huntington Historical Society Liberty 250 bus tour, following George Washington’s 1790 route through Huntington, has already sold out. It is a reminder to residents to check the calendar frequently and secure tickets early for high-demand events.

The 16th Annual Huntington Station Spring Cleanup is also approaching, bringing together volunteers to help clean and beautify the community. The event continues to be a strong example of neighbors working together and taking pride in their shared spaces. Sign up to volunteer with us!

As always, there are many more events happening across the Town of Huntington. Residents are encouraged to visit the Community Calendar for a full list of upcoming activities and to submit their own events.

Development Update: Melville Town Center Project Moves Forward

Melville Crossing, the proposed mixed-use development at 75 Maxess Road in Melville has received Town Board approval in a 4 to 1 vote.

The project will redevelop a large office and industrial site into a 16.2-acre mixed-use residential and commercial space within the Melville Town Center. While there has been discussion and differing opinions from residents and officials, the approval marks the first of what may be several similar proposals in the area.

Residents can review the full Town Board meeting for detailed discussion and context behind the decision.

Greenlawn Broadway Improvements Progress

A well-attended public meeting highlighted the Broadway improvements project in Greenlawn, a long-anticipated effort focused on pedestrian and traffic safety.

The Town of Huntington is moving forward with traffic calming measures, including new crosswalk alignments, flashing pedestrian signals, adjusted parking layouts, and road striping designed to naturally slow traffic.

The project is on a tight timeline and reflects decades of advocacy by the Greenlawn Civic Association. Once complete, these improvements are expected to make the area safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

Community Awareness: Daycare Investigation in Northport

A serious situation is unfolding in Northport involving The Learning Experience Daycare on Fort Salonga Road.

According to reports, Suffolk County Police Department Special Victims Unit detectives are investigating allegations that a child may have been abused by a daycare worker at that location. No individuals have been publicly identified and the investigation remains ongoing.

State records from the New York Office of Children and Family Services show the center has multiple substantiated violations that were not corrected, including improper discipline practices such as corporal punishment and incidents where staff actions were found to frighten or humiliate a child. There were also failures to report suspected abuse and concerns about staff qualifications.

These findings are specific to the Northport location and not other centers operated by the company.

Residents are encouraged to remain informed, ask questions, and advocate for their children.

Neighborhood Watch: Dog Park Incident Update

The investigation into the West Hills County Park dog stabbing incident remains ongoing.

The dog, Sunny, who had been in the process of being adopted by a local family, passed away from her injuries shortly after the incident. The case has been referred to the Suffolk County SPCA and the Suffolk County District Attorney for review.

As of now, no arrests have been made. Huntington Matters will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

E-Bike Safety: What Residents Need to Know

Recent e-bike accidents involving teenagers have raised serious concerns across the community.

One incident in Greenlawn and another along Jericho Turnpike left a young rider critically injured.

Key Suffolk County rules include:

Riders must be at least 16 years old

Helmets are required for all riders

E-bikes are only permitted on roads with speed limits of 30 mph or less

Higher-speed e-bikes may not be permitted

These devices are significantly more powerful than traditional bicycles, and many riders underestimate the speed and control required.

Families are encouraged to have direct conversations about safety and usage.

Neighborhood Watch: Theft Alert in East Northport

A recent incident in East Northport involved the theft of an ATV and multiple dirt bikes from a residential property.

Surveillance images show individuals entering the property and removing the vehicles. Residents who recognize the individuals or vehicles are encouraged to contact Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Residents are advised to meet buyers in neutral locations and avoid showing how vehicles are stored at their homes.

Facebook Nicknames Are Getting Out of Hand

Huntington Matters addressed concerns around Facebook’s nickname feature, which allows anonymous posting within groups.

While intended to encourage participation, it has also led to misuse. Huntington Matters Community Forum Administrators are monitoring activity closely and exploring options to limit or remove the feature if possible.

Respectful communication is expected regardless of how a comment is posted.

Emergency Preparedness Reminder

Residents are encouraged to sign up for Town of Huntington emergency alerts and register for Smart911, making sure their information is current.

As Earth Day approaches, communities across Huntington are celebrating with a wide range of events focused on nature, sustainability, and family-friendly fun. From hands-on workshops and outdoor festivals to educational wildlife programs, there are plenty of ways to get involved locally. Highlights include a large Earth Day Celebration at West Hills County Park featuring live music, kids’ activities, and a farmers’ market, as well as Family Earth Day at Elwood Park with giveaways, environmental exhibits, and free activities. You can also explore smaller experiences like an Earth Day Party with free food and wellness offerings, a terrarium-building workshop in Cold Spring Harbor, and a Spring Clean-Up event in Huntington Station. For those interested in local wildlife, don’t miss Earth Day at Caumsett with Volunteers for Wildlife, where you can meet native animals and learn about conservation efforts right here on Long Island. Keep an eye out for the icon marking free events! Be sure to check each event for details, and visit the Huntington Matters Community Calendar for even more upcoming events.

HUNTINGTON, NY

Community members, local leaders, and advocates gathered at Heckscher Park on Sunday, April 12, 2026, for a ceremony centered on remembrance, resilience, and recovery. The Hope & Healing Statue Blessing Ceremony brought residents together to honor lives impacted by addiction.

Hosted by Councilwoman Theresa Mari, artist Susan Buroker, and the Town of Huntington Opioid & Addiction Task Force, the event marked the continued presence of the sculpture installed last summer, now a visible symbol for individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.

Pastor Matthew Means of Old First Presbyterian Church spoke about witnessing the project take shape from nearby,“I have the privilege of having an office space right in the back corner of this building,” he said. “When this sculpture was first announced and the work began, I got the chance to text Sharon all the time about the progress and what a joy it was. Now, having had this sculpture present, I can tell you that what I see week by week is the embodiment of the hope and healing that we hoped for in creating this space.”

Following remarks from town officials, task force members, and a blessing by Pastor Means, a plaque was presented honoring former Town of Huntington Councilman Sal Ferro for his dedication to addressing addiction in the community. His work was recognized as part of Huntington’s efforts around awareness, prevention, and recovery.

Buroker spoke directly to that impact, “When many chose to look away, you chose to step forward,” she said. “When addiction was something whispered about in the shadows, you had the strength to bring it into the light. You recognized that this is not just an issue, but a disease that affects families.”

As the program wrapped up, attention shifted back to the sculpture and the plaque recognizing Ferro’s contribution, now part of the park and the town’s ongoing work.

Dog Park Incident Raises Concern in West Hills

One of the most talked-about topics this week in Huntington Matters Community Forum was a disturbing incident at the West Hills County Park dog park.

According to reports, a man stabbed a dog and later told police he “did what he had to do.”

For many local residents, this park is more than just a place to walk dogs. Diane and Dana both shared that they regularly bring their dogs there and are part of a supportive, familiar community of dog owners who look out for one another.

They noted that in their experience, there have not been issues like this, and that dog parks can be safe, positive environments when used appropriately. For those new to dog parks, it’s recommended to visit during less crowded times or slowly acclimate dogs on leash over multiple visits before allowing full group interaction.

Missing Person Update and Ongoing Search

There was encouraging news this week regarding Justin Rodriguez, who has been found safe in Manhattan and referred for medical attention.

However, the community is still being asked to stay alert for Joseph Competiello of Elwood, age 55, approximately 5’8” tall, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and a shaved head.

As always, residents are encouraged to report any information to Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-TIPS and to continue sharing updates when possible.

A Busy Week of Events Across Huntington

It was a big weekend across Huntington, with thousands of families attending Easter events throughout the town.

The Town of Huntington hosted an egg hunt with 4,000 eggs, while the United Lutheran Church event welcomed nearly 800 children.

Looking ahead, there are many opportunities to get involved.

The Historic Cemetery Restoration Project continues this weekend, and volunteers are being sought to help clean and maintain Revolutionary War burial sites ahead of the upcoming Liberty 250 commemoration.

On Sunday, the Hope and Healing Statue Blessing Ceremony will take place at Heckscher Park, bringing together community members, local leaders, and families for a meaningful event.

Residents can also begin registering for the Town of Huntington’s Project Play and St. John’s summer camp programs, which open this week for income-qualified families.

Additional meetings and events include:

Public Information Session on Broadway Safety Improvements in Greenlawn
Town Board Meeting at Town Hall
Mobile American Flag Drop-Off Program at East Northport Public Library for proper retirement of worn flags

There are many more events happening throughout the week. Be sure to visit the Huntington Matters Community Calendar for full details and to submit your own events.

Huntington Station DRI Meeting Draws Community Attention

Discussion this week also centered around the Huntington Station Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) streetscape meeting.

Residents continue to follow plans that include improvements to sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, and public spaces throughout the area. As we covered in last week’s episode, these changes are expected to impact the look and feel of Huntington Station in the coming years.

Community feedback remains an important part of the process, and meetings like this provide residents with an opportunity to stay informed and engaged.

Neighborhood Watch: Updates from the 2nd Precinct

This week’s Neighborhood Watch update included both positive news and important changes.

In addition to the update on Justin Rodriguez, residents learned that Captain Dennis McKeefery has returned to the 2nd Precinct. He previously served as a COPE officer and worked as a Detective alongside Inspector Rivera.

Captain Kyle Simcox was also recognized as he moves into a new county-wide position.

Residents are encouraged to stay connected through Huntington Matters for ongoing Neighborhood Watch updates.

Warmer Weather and Seasonal Preparedness Tips

With temperatures expected to reach the 70s this week, it’s a good time to check both tree and bush maintenance around your property.

A simple but important tip shared this week focuses on removing the “3 Ds” — dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Residents should also clear branches away from power lines and rooftops, and thin interior growth to reduce wind resistance during storms.

Taking these steps now can help prevent damage later.

Charity Spotlight: American Legion Posts Across Huntington

This week’s spotlight focused on the American Legion, with three active posts serving the Huntington community in Huntington, Greenlawn, and Northport.

Founded in 1919, the American Legion has spent more than a century supporting veterans, servicemembers, and local communities.

Their work continues locally through advocacy, programs, and outreach, while also supporting national efforts that have shaped benefits for generations of veterans.

Huntington Matters also continues its Huntington Matters Gives Back efforts, honoring and remembering Al Statton, creator of the Operation Enduring Care program supporting homeless veterans. These ongoing contributions help continue his mission and support veterans in need within our community.

A Community on Alert: Help Locate Missing Resident

This week’s update opened with an urgent call for help from the community.

Suffolk County Police are asking for assistance in locating Justin Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Huntington resident who was reported missing after last being seen near Breezy Park in Huntington Station.

According to updates shared by family members, Justin may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time he disappeared. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and report any information to Suffolk County Police.

Easter Weekend Across Huntington: Egg Hunts & Family Events

With Easter weekend here, Huntington is packed with events for families across town.

From the Town of Huntington’s Easter Egg Hunt at Elwood Park to events at local farms, churches, and community organizations, there are eight or more egg hunts happening this weekend alone, including options for younger children and sensory-friendly experiences.

There are also events like Northport’s Shop & Hop and even a “Leftovers Egg Hunt” happening after the holiday.

And that’s just a small sample. There are many more events happening across the Town of Huntington this week. Be sure to check the Huntington Matters Community Calendar for the full list.

Huntington Station DRI Meeting & SCPD 2nd Precinct Meeting (April 7)

Two important community meetings are happening on April 7, and both are worth attending.

The Huntington Station Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) Streetscape Meeting will take place at the Huntington Community First Aid Squad at 6:00pm. This builds on last week’s episode where we discussed the DRI plans in detail, including proposed improvements like sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, and public spaces.

Later that evening, the Suffolk County Police Department 2nd Precinct Community Meeting will be held at 7:00pm at the South Huntington Public Library. Residents can speak directly with officers, ask questions, and stay informed about local safety concerns.

Neighborhood Watch: Scam Alert Impacting Local Businesses

This week’s Neighborhood Watch segment highlighted a scam affecting small businesses across Long Island.

A “short change” scammer has been targeting local delis and shops, using distraction and sleight-of-hand tactics to confuse cashiers and walk away with cash.

Local businesses are encouraged to:

Keep bills visible until transactions are complete

Count change back clearly

Train staff on common scam tactics

Business owners should report any similar incidents to the Suffolk County Police Department immediately. If you recognize this individual, call 1-800-220-TIPS. And if this has happened to you, do not feel embarrassed. This is happening across Long Island and is designed to trick even experienced employees.

Organ Donation Awareness & Local Impact

April is Organ Donation Awareness Month, and the Town of Huntington marked the occasion with a flag-raising ceremony and community stories that left a lasting impression.

Residents heard directly from organ recipients and donors, including local town employees whose lives were saved through transplantation.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives and help many more through tissue donation. It was a powerful reminder of how one decision can impact an entire community.

Let’s Talk Huntington: Building Community Conversations

Councilwoman Jen Hebert’s “Let’s Talk, Huntington” event brought residents together for an open, roundtable-style conversation about local issues.

The goal is to make this a monthly series, rotating across different areas of Huntington. Huntington Matters will continue to share upcoming dates through the Community Calendar so residents can participate.

More Events, Fundraisers & Community Highlights

Beyond Easter weekend, there is no shortage of ways to get involved across Huntington.

Highlights this week include:

Paws For Our Heroes – A fundraiser supporting Paws of War, helping provide service dogs to veterans

Free art exhibits at the Heckscher Museum of Art and Moksha Café

Creative community gatherings like Stitch n Bitch – the Nautilus Roasting fiber arts meetup

The upcoming HSLQ & Huntington Matters Huntington Station Spring Cleanup on May 3rd

There are many more events happening throughout the week, so be sure to check the Community Calendar for the full list.

Emergency Preparedness: A Real-Life Lesson

This week’s preparedness tip came from real experience.

After June experienced a home flooding incident, an important lesson emerged. When water damage happens, stop the source of the water, document everything, and call professionals immediately. Do not rush to clean it up before insurance guidance, as hidden moisture can cause serious long-term damage.

One preventative tip shared by 1-800 Water Damage remediation experts is especially helpful for homeowners. When finishing lower levels of your home, install sheetrock and insulation approximately two inches above the floor, and use base moulding to cover the gap. This allows water to pass underneath without soaking into walls, which can prevent widespread and costly damage.

Additional measures like water sensors and automatic shut-off systems can also help protect your home.

Charity Spotlight: Helping Hand Rescue Mission

This week’s spotlight featured Helping Hand Rescue Mission, which supports over 1,000 local families each month with food, clothing, and essential supplies.

Their work goes far beyond a traditional food pantry. They provide fresh produce, meat, dairy, household essentials, and ongoing support for families in crisis. Programs like “Baby Blessings” distribute diapers and supplies to families with young children, while seasonal efforts include hundreds of Easter baskets for local kids.

What stands out this time of year is how different parts of the community come together. Organizations like the Jewish Nutrition Network regularly partner with Helping Hand to provide large-scale food donations, showing how neighbors of different faiths support one another across Huntington.
