SUMMARY:Kids Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day – Grades K-5 – FREE
DESCRIPTION:Kids will listen to a story written by an Indigenous author, Mandy Miller Jackson, Montaukett Indian Nation and complete a Dreamcatcher craft project in celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. \nChildren in grades K–5 will listen to a story by an Indigenous author and then create a Dreamcatcher craft.\nDreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people, who live in the American Great Lakes region and parts of Canada. The tradition was later adopted by other Indigenous cultures and is now widely practiced throughout North America. Dreamcatchers can be made from many materials, including wood, yarn, feathers, beads, ribbons, gemstones and seashells.\nThe program aims to practice cultural appreciation, not appropriation, while helping children develop respect for the beauty and ingenuity of Indigenous cultures.\nMonday, October 12, 2026\n2:00 PM – 3:30 PM\nWalt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center\nHuntington Station, NY\nCost: Free. \nTo Save A Spot – CLICK HERE ( https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kids-celebrate-indigenous-peoples-day-tickets-1994951403350 )\nPresented by the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association.\n
